I was honored to be asked by Terry Gibson to participate in My Writing Process Blog Tour.  #MondayBlogs. Terry is a truly great person. I have had the pleasure of reading her poetry and blogs for many years. She is empathetic, kind, supportive, and a wonderful writer. Here is a link to her blog. It is definitely worth the time and the read. http://mystoryourstory.org/?p=3168

What am I working on?

Presently, I am working on the second in the series of children’s books adapted from Dinky: The Nurse Mare’s Foal. Dinky’s Quest: The Journey Begins is written for ages three to eight and focus’ on his issues learning how to give and get respect, understand that his place in life is as special as everyone else’s. He learns that it doesn’t matter where he came from or the fact that he grew up without a mother he is still special. My husband and I adopted Dinky when he was four months old. He had been taken away from his mother at birth. He is now five years old and still learning how to be a horse in the world of humans. Both Dinky: The Nurse Mare’s Foal and Dinky’s Quest: The Journey Begins are written from his point of view and color illustrated for young children and those young at heart. The first book is out and available in both kindle and hardcover.

I am also in the process of finishing another of my mother's paranormal stories. She wrote all her life, with dream to become a published author. However, she never finished any of her stories and I promised her I would do so and get them published.

How does my work differ from others of its genre?

I write in many different genre’s, but the central theme in all my writing, whether it is poetry, a story, or a novel, is that no matter who you are or where you grew up there can be hope at the end of the tunnel. Everyone has something special to offer and no matter how different you may be from other people you know, you will find a place you fit in.

Why do I write what I do?

I grew up in a family that was more dysfunctional than most, in a small town in Northern Minnesota, because we were poor and my father was the town drunk, many people in town wouldn't socialize with us or allow their children to do so. Just before my twelfth birthday my parents split up, leaving me the oldest child at home and in charge of my three younger siblings.
We ended up moving quite a lot and as a result I never got to know anyone my age. As a result, I learned to empathize with those who were different and seek out a way for us to help each other grow into better people.
Reading was both an escape into an imaginary world and a way to imagine other lives and times.

How does your writing process work?

When an idea, thought, line, or I see something that interests me or makes me feel, it begins to take shape in my mind and at some point it becomes a story, poem, or a novel. There have been times that I have pulled over on the side of the road because I didn’t want to forget the line running through my head. If it is something that requires research, I will seek out anything I can find that is on the subject to add to the realistic aspect of the scene I am trying to create.

My main goal is to paint a picture through my words that will take the reader into a different place. I have a tendency to do a lot of writing in first person and have learned that the use of dialogue in the work is essential to move the story forward.

I have asked Julia Robb and Dellani Oakes to join the #MondayBlogs. They will be posting next week, here is a bit of information about them I think you will find them both fascinating writers and people.

Julia Robb grew up in West Texas, on the Southern Great Plains where the land goes on as far as the eye can see and the wind never stops blowing. She was a Preacher’s kid, as her father was a Methodist minister. The congregations in Abilene, Hamlin, Midland, places nobody ever heard of, called her father Brother Robb and sang Amazing Grace with a haunting pathos Julia has never been able to forget.

Life went on, marriage/no marriage, your usual mayhem, and she became a reporter, fighting for each story like Pickett’s Charge, at the Battle of Gettysburg. Attitude must have counted as she earned six Associated Press Awards, one for Best Breaking News Story and one for Best Feature Series, among others.

In 2004, the APME Headliners Foundation chose Julia as Star Reporter Of The Year.

You can still read her "Texas Observer" stories on-line, one on West Texas' shrinking population, The Last Picture Show, For Real, and one on death masks housed in the Midland, Texas museum, Who Were Those Masked Men?

Julia now lives in Marshall, Texas, in the state’s pine and lake country, and writes novels.

So far, she’s written Scalp Mountain, Saint of the Burning Heart and Del Norte, all set in the West Texas country she’s never been able to forget.

Scalp and Del Norte are historical novels set on the frontier, and Saint is set in 1960’s Texas.

Dellani Oakes makes her home in Florida, but she grew up in Western Nebraska. Before that, she had lived in four other states. Since then, she has added two more, giving her a unique perspective on life. Always a people watcher, Dellani put that talent to use when she became an author.

Bitten by the writing bug early in life, Dellani first pursued poetry as her medium of self-expression. Soon, she moved on the song parodies and then short stories and humorous essays. Once she got to high school, it became apparent that she needed to learn to spell when she got a paper back from her English teacher, “For content: A+. For mechanics: F.” That comment changed her life, forcing her to focus as much on how she said things as well as what she said.

Dellani took up writing full time when her youngest son started kindergarten in 2002. Since then, she has published five books. Her two romantic suspense novels are with Tirgearr Publishing, though she has an historical romance and two sci-fi novels with Second Wind Publishing. She has also contributed to several anthologies, MJ Magazine and shares her unpublished works on her blog.

Because she loves to talk to other authors, Dellani hosts two talk shows a month on Blog Talk Radio. Listen in every second Monday of the month at 4:00 PM Eastern for Dellani's Tea Time, and every fourth Wednesday, at 4:00 PM Eastern for What's Write for Me. You can find Dellani @ www.dellanioakes.wordpress.com. She writes the most wonderful blog posts.
